Educator, artist, mother, twin, wife, ski racer, dog lover, tennis player.
It all started with a love of rocks, said Cady Taylor, as she described growing up in Rhode Island during the summer at her Grandmother’s house. She talked of how her grandmother would send all of the kids out to Rocky Beach to collect rocks for her garden. To this day, Cady still walks the beach with her kids collecting rocks and just watching the waves wash onto the beach. The rocks look like diamonds and all the myriad of colors come out and it’s just beautiful.
The artistic process of designing a piece of jewelry is what draws Cady to her craft; laying out the stones and beads on a plate, moving them around, mixing and matching colors, until it all just works. She adds that none of her pieces are exactly alike, adding that she couldn’t design the same piece of jewelry over and over again. The good part is that every piece is different, the bad news, you can’t get an exact replica. Her newest design, the Bola, draws on her knowledge of Spanish and Hispanic cultures. She is fluent in Spanish and lived and studied in Spain. Literally, the bola is a strong cord with one or two heavy balls secured to the ends used to herd cattle by the cowboys of South America. Using colorful pieces of rawhide, Cady attaches stones or beads to the ends and then experimented with different lengths and ways of wearing the Bola.
Her sense of style comes from an innate love of color and materials and her observation of people. Whether it’s at the grocery store or a restaurant, on the tennis court or at the beach, she likes to see how people are dressing and what they are wearing. It’s a dream job for Cady, who lives in Exeter, NH with her husband, Peter, their two children, Brodt and Molly, and the two dogs, Melanie and Mopsy. In summer, the family heads to Rhode Island where Cady’s mother lives. Now, she brings her work with her and still has time to go to Rocky Beach and watch the waves break over the rocks.
